How to Organise Your Kitchen Cupboards

Posted: 29/04/2026

If your kitchen cupboards are a bit of a jumble right now, you are definitely not alone. From half-used packets of pasta to mystery tins hiding at the back, it does not take long for things to get out of hand. The good news is that with a little time and a simple system, you can turn your cupboards into an organised, easy-to-use space that actually stays clean.

This is not about perfection. It is about making your kitchen work better for you and making cleaning quicker and easier too.

Why cupboard organisation matters

When your cupboards are organised, everything becomes simpler. You can find what you need quickly, avoid buying duplicates, and keep on top of food waste. It also makes your regular kitchen clean much easier because you are not constantly working around clutter.

A tidy cupboard also means fewer crumbs, spills and sticky surprises lurking in the corners. So in a way, organising is cleaning.

Step 1: Empty everything out

Start by taking everything out of your cupboards. Yes, everything.

This might feel like a big job, but it is the only way to properly see what you have and give the shelves a proper clean.

While everything is out:

  • Check expiry dates and throw away anything out of date
  • Get rid of anything you know you will not use
  • Group similar items together on the worktop

Step 2: Give your cupboards a proper clean

Before putting anything back, take the opportunity to clean the inside of your cupboards properly.

Focus on:

  • Wiping down shelves with a warm, soapy cloth
  • Tackling any sticky spills or crumbs in the corners
  • Drying surfaces so they are ready for your items

This is where having a regular cleaning routine really helps. Keeping cupboards clean means they are much easier to organise in the first place.

Step 3: Group items by category

Now comes the fun part. Instead of putting things back randomly, group them into categories.

For example:

  • Baking items (flour, sugar, baking powder)
  • Tins and jars
  • Snacks
  • Pasta, rice and grains
  • Breakfast items

This makes it much easier to find things and helps everyone in the household know where things belong.

Step 4: Use simple storage solutions

You do not need to spend a fortune, but a few simple storage items can make a big difference.

Consider:

  • Clear containers for dry goods like pasta or cereal
  • Small baskets for packets and snacks
  • Shelf risers to make use of vertical space
  • Lazy Susans for awkward corner cupboards
  • A bread bin to store bread, rolls and pastries

Keeping things contained helps prevent mess and makes wiping down shelves quicker when you are cleaning.

Step 5: Put things back with purpose

As you return items to your cupboards, think about how often you use them.

  • Keep everyday items at eye level
  • Store less-used items higher up or at the back
  • Keep heavier items on lower shelves

This not only makes your kitchen more practical but also reduces the chances of spills and accidents, which means less cleaning later.

Step 6: Keep it maintained

The key to organised cupboards is not just the initial sort out, it is keeping on top of it.

A few simple habits can help:

  • Do a quick check once a week and tidy as needed
  • Wipe up spills as soon as they happen
  • Avoid overbuying food you do not need
  • Put things back in their proper place
