9 Daily rituals of the world’s most successful people

Becoming healthier, smarter and more successful in every aspect of your life takes hard work and dedication. It’s a long journey to reach these goals and it never comes easy. Every great story involves a character that goes through trials and tribulations to reach their mountain top – why should we think our path would be any different?

However, this doesn’t mean that you can’t move the odds closer to your favour. One of the best things you can do is study closely the lives of those people who have reached their personal summits and see what practices and habits you might be able to adopt. Here we will look at some of the most commonly cited daily rituals and habits of successful people.

1 - Journaling

Journaling isn’t about being productive, nor is it about laying down the foundations of your own personal autobiography. The pages of your diary serve the purpose of therapy and counselling. By committing to a regular journal, either first thing in the morning or the last thing at night, you will start to see changes over time. Unloading your frustrations and fears as well as your hopes and your dreams without fear of judgement can be a deeply cathartic process that improves your day and helps you focus better.

2 - Meditation

Long gone are the days of mindfulness and meditation being the preserve of hippies sat crossed legged and swinging in the breeze. Today, meditation is practiced by millions of people across various walks of life. Meditation has even been introduced in giant corporations like Monsanto, Google, Procter & Gamble as well as the U.S. Army. Companies like Google claim that mindfulness and meditation classes help their employees to have a “balanced awareness” of what is happening around them. Interested in trying it? 3 - Exercise

Keeping fit has many benefits. Not only does it mean that you can be healthy enough to enjoy any success you might have but it also can put you in a better frame of mind to make decisions that benefit your life. Whether going for a morning run, lifting weights, taking part in a Pilates class or something entirely different like indoor rock climbing, there are so many ways that you can lead a more active lifestyle – a proven way to alleviate anxiety and depression and keep your body in good working order.

4 - Dedicate time to a new skill

Spending time learning new skills can be a great way to turn your mind off from work, investing your time into something other than the daily grind. However, some skills are not only enjoyable to learn but can also benefit you in the workplace. Take learning a new language for example. The ability to communicate well is one of the top sought after traits in business and a common skill of great leaders. Communication means not only being able to get your ideas across but also to listen and understand other people too. Learning a new language enables you to understand other people’s perspectives and cultures, it improves your listening skills, strengthens your own understanding of language and can open new doors for you in many aspects of your life.

5 - Know your true intentions for the day

There is a lot more to becoming organized than just writing a to-do list. As you sit by your phone fielding calls and emails it’s easy for a to-do list to grow in length and as it does your real priorities can become obscured. To knock this problem on the head you should start your day by writing down your goals. What are my intentions for today? What are my priorities? What’s more, having a ‘true north’ for your day can help you to get that much-needed feeling of satisfaction at the end of the day, once you achieve your goal.

6 - Reconnect with Nature

With so much technology disrupting our lives, it’s easy to become disconnected from nature. However, the natural world is vital to our mental balance. Going for daily walks through parks, and hikes at the weekends will obviously provide huge boosts to your mental wellbeing, but even introducing a simple office plant will provide small sparks of joy.

7 - Learn to say no

Self-help guru Tim Ferris writes in his best-selling book ‘Tribe Of Mentors’ that one of the keys to success in business is to learn to say no. Not only in your personal life but also in business. As you start making headway and establishing yourself as a leader in your field, your attention will be fought for. However, it’s critical that you use your time efficiently and only say yes to the right commitments. He recommends that when you find yourself in situations that you ask yourself why you are motivated to attend. If it’s guilt or fear (in any capacity) then you shouldn’t go.

8 - Avoid multitasking

Everybody is different and while some people are great at multi-tasking, other people are much more effective when they are dedicated to one task. If you can be fully present while you are sending an email, making a phone call or talking to someone in a meeting then you might do a better job of it. This extends outside of work too, to spending time with friends and family and knowing when to keep your phone in your pocket at the dinner table.

9 - Keep the glass half full

A positive mindset can have a big impact on your day. Even if you are having a particularly bad day, positive thinking can help to turn things in your favour. Imagining yourself achieving your goals helps trick your brain into thinking that that they aren’t all that difficult and helps you to chase them down, instead of cowering away. Remind yourself that every mis-step or failure is another step towards success.
