BOLTON

Bolton is a town in Greater Manchester and it is surrounded by several smaller districts including Horwich, Westhoughton, Blackrod, Little lever and Farnworth. It also has a number of rural villages including Egerton, Ainsworth, Bradshaw and Harwood.

Bolton originated as a small settlement in the moorland known as Bolton Le Moors. One of the most famous inventors from Bolton was Samuel Crompton from Tongue Moor, who invented the spinning mule, a machine that revolutionised the cotton industry worldwide.

The town is proud to have an award winning professional boxing champion Amir Khan who now runs his own boxing academy in Bolton. In addition Bolton has a multi-award winning Olympian track cyclist - Jason Kenny from Farnworth. He is the joint holder of the highest number of Olympic golds for a British athlete. He has also been awarded an OBE for his services in this event.

The town has a number of famous TV personalities and entertainers including Paddy McGuiness and Comedian Peter Kay who were born in Farnworth. Another well known personality, Fred Dibnah, who lived in Bolton was a famous Steeplejack who featured on TV. He was also awarded an MBE.    

Bolton has a number of well known landmarks include the Octagon Theatre and the Bolton Museum and Art Gallery; Bolton has recently renovated its Market Place with a new multi-complex cinema in its shopping centre.

BURY

The name ‘Bury’ comes from an old English word meaning castle, stronghold or fort. Bury is a town in Greater Manchester which is surrounded by a number of districts including Edenfield, Ramsbottom, and Walmsley. Bury has several smaller villages including Hawkshaw, Affetside, Holcombe and Walshaw that together form the Metropolitan Borough of Bury.

Bury emerged in the Industrial Revolution as a Mill town, manufacturing textiles. A renowned Bury resident Sir Robert Peel was a British Prime Minister who founded the Metropolitan Police and Conservative Party.

Bury’s most famous land marks include the Peel Memorial that stands outside Bury parish church and the Peel Monument on Holcombe Hill in Ramsbottom.

There are a number of well known TV actors including Anthony Cotton and Jane Danson from Coronation Street, Lisa Riley from Emmerdale, and Cherie Blair - the ex Prime Minister’s wife - who were all born in Bury.

Bury has become well known for its open-air market and the traditional local black pudding. The town has improved its infrastructure and network links and people travel from afar to visit the famous Market. Another popular event hosted each year in Bury is the Ramsbottom Chocolate Carnival. More recently Bury Town Centre has had a complete renovation and now offers an up-market, vibrant, stylish retail shopping complex called The Rock with several flagship stores, dining and leisure experiences for the public.
